For many years we have had birds build here in our carport, next to the door. There are three places in this shelf that have a nest. We do not clean them out, because the birds come back!. We hope the neighbor cat will not eat the baby birds. He stays on the driveway or in the carport. We try to watch and politely ask him to go home, but we cannot watch all the time. Keep your fingers and paws crossed that the babies will make it out. The Mom and Dad are feeding right now. We had a snake one year. She ate the baby birds. We were very sad. We have fixed the shelf so the snake cannot climb up there anymore...but cats can jump, which we worry about. (None of us are allowed owtside, so we will not eat the baby birds.)
We will put a photo of the snake below. At the time it was taken, there were patterns in the shelf. After Mom took the picture, she pulled the snake down, it had already eaten the little bitty baby birds (it would not hurt her, it is a Black Snake) and tried to catch her to take her to the woods, but Ms. Snake was able to get into a hole at the end of the carport. Mom let her go because she really did not want to hurt her, she just wanted to make her go live somewhere else!

My human loves snakes (they are her favorite critters next to cats and goats), but she still thinks it is kind of sad she ate the baby birds.
ReplyDeleteWe think it's sad too... but we understand how it all works. We'll hope for the best for your current crop of babies.
ReplyDeleteYep, unfortunatley that happens, makes me sad too.
ReplyDeleteOh me and Charlie - well more me than Charlie!! - have everything crossed that these beautiful baby birds make it!! Baby birds and mama and papa birds are so vulnerable at this time to all predators! I do feel for them and I do hope and pray that they make it! Thank you for looking out for them!!! They need all the help they can get!
ReplyDeletep.s. I do admire that beautiful snake too!
Take care

That snake is pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteWe hope the baby birds survive to fly from the nest...though we think the parent birds would do better to build their nest in a safer spot. LOL.

You are lucky to have birdies like that!
ReplyDeleteWe hope the baby birdies make it!
