who gave the dog to be companion of our pleasures and our toils,
hath invested him with a nature noble and incapable of deceit ~
Sir Walter Scott

A black Labrador who saved the lives of dozens of soldiers in Afghanistan by detecting a bomb has been awarded the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.
Sadie will become only the 25th canine recipient when she receives the medal from Princess Alexandra at a ceremony next week.

PETA Involved In Cruelty Trial

~ It is hard to be brave, when you're only a Very Small Animal ~
Piglet, Pooh's Little Instruction Book

Jurors will decide whether two of PETA employees were, as PETA argues, providing humane deaths to animals that would otherwise have been painfully killed in gas chambers -- or whether, as several local officials say, they were taking animals on the promise of finding them homes and secretly killing them.

Patrick and Bob Update

~ Be yourself. No one can ever tell you you're doing it wrong ~

Patrick was shivering last Thursday, and when I spoke to the doctor about this, she asked had I taken his temperature?

Uhhh... No.

I didn't even have a thermometer and the largest animal I'd ever taken a temp on was a dachshund!

Patrick didn't particularity want me to take his temperature, but I finally got enough of a reading to let the vet know it was 105.8.

My next step was buying penicillin and needles and syringes.
The next step was giving the ten injections.

Not being able to catch, hold and inject Patrick, I called on a relative, a neighbor, a friend, a vet tech, and a kennel master to help me. I was the catcher, holder while others did the injections...which hurt him!

The vet said more than likely, his pads/feet hurt so much that he laid down on the damp ground too long and got an infection.

Both Bob and Patrick's pads seem to be healing now, but Patrick is still not using his front left leg. The vet said the chase has caused some arthritis to flare up. Having RA myself, I know the pain he is in...although most say animals don't feel pain as we do. I don't know if I go along with that when it comes to my 'kids'!

One of the dogs that came in had wrapped herself into her lead/leash so bad that it damaged some of her insides and bruised her. It also twisted around her tail and she has no feeling in her tail now. It may have to be removed, as there is no circulation. I feel so bad for the dog. I don't like to see any animal suffer, and it broke my heart when I heard about this. I will update as I know more.

I've been keeping both Boyz in the basement at night. When I let them out they are so afraid. There is no telling what they've been through that I don't know about. The yard and fence is as secure as I can make it without putting in electricity, which may have to be my next step...if Patrick recovers.

Goats Need Vet Care

~ A righteous man has regard for the life of his beast ~
Proverbs 12:10

The dogs got in for a third time. Patrick got the worse of it. There are no puncture wounds, as both of the Boyz were able to get up on a four inch ledge all three (so far) times. I don't know how long they had to stand there each time but this time he is limping.

Unfortunately, both of them have bruised pads, and Patrick has gone lame in front left leg. Doctor said he has some arthritis, but he has never limped before this. His feet were bruised so bad, she wrapped them with medicine inside the bandages. He didn't care for the back one, but kept the front one on, as he couldn't get to it. My daughter and I managed to get it off yesterday.

He and Bob spent the night in the basement, but he wanted out (tries real hard to turn that door knob!) I let him out the next day, Tuesday, but he is not better today, Thursday. Hopefully he will start using his leg, if he doesn't he will never be able to escape the dogs, and my son and I reinforced my fence as well as we could.
I'm very concerned about him. I'm very scared for both of them.
I can't let them be together, as Bob wants to play and Patrick definitely does not!

Gasper Looses Battle ..

Georgia Aquarium officials said that beloved beluga whale, Gasper, was humanely euthanized.

Gasper had been ill prior to arriving at the Georgia Aquarium in October, 2005. He was severely underweight and had visible skin lesions. Gasper was later diagnosed with osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone.

In the past few days, Gasper's physical condition declined rapidly.

Recognizing Gasper's failing health and with quality of life in mind, the Georgia Aquarium's veterinarian team made the hard decision to humanely euthanize the whale.

"We rescued Gasper knowing that he was seriously ill, but were hopeful that we might have been able to save him," said said Bernie Marcus, Georgia Aquarium benefactor and chairman of the board.

Gasper won the hearts of the Atlanta community as he entertained Aquarium visitors.

A beluga whale sculpture is being developed for the Georgia Aquarium entrance plaza.

Aquarium guests may sign memory books located on the first and second floors of the beluga exhibit.
